My idol Cesar Millan is often called the Dr. Phil for dogs. But therapy doesn't stop with the pets. Cesar often has to re-train the dogs' owners to be more effective leaders for their furry friends. So I kept a record of all the episodes in his 1st Season and the first 3 for the 2nd season. The Dog Whisperer series are just a few of the growing collections I have at home which I intend to share with fellow dog lovers in the near future... :-)  EMAIL ME

THE DOG WHISPERER

Renowned dog behavior expert Cesar Millan is one of the most sought-after experts working in the field of dog rehabilitation. From bullying Chihuahuas to timid Great Danes, Cesar has an uncanny gift for communicating with dogs and seeing the world through their eyes.

Cesar has been called a Dr. Phil for dogs, and for good reason. His amazing rehabilitations of aggressive, scared, lazy, compulsive and jealous dogs — and the families that are usually in the dark about how their own behavior contributes to the dogs' quirky traits — captured the national spotlight when his National Geographic Channel (NGC) series Dog Whisperer premiered last year. On Friday, January 6, 2006, at 8 p.m. ET/PT Dog Whisperer returns for a primetime second season with expanded hour-long episodes.

Cesar has over 20 years of experience with canines. His unique talent with dogs first developed on his grandfather's farm in Mexico. Now, at his Dog Psychology Center in Los Angeles, he receives as many as 100 calls a week from owners desperate for help. By the time people call Cesar, they are confronting a crisis with their beloved pets. He is their emergency responder, and often their last resort.

News of Cesar's skills quickly spread after the launch of Dog Whisperer, and it wasn't long before Oprah Winfrey invited him to help with her dog, Sophie, on her national television program. Other celebrities who now count themselves as satisfied customers include Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Vin Diesel, Nicolas Cage, Scarlett Johannson, Hillary Duff, Daisy Fuentes, Annie Potts, and movie directors Ridley Scott and Michael Bay. In addition to The Oprah Winfrey Show, Cesar has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Live with Regis & Kelly.

Each episode of Dog Whisperer goes into the homes of troubled dogs and their frustrated owners, documenting the remarkable rehabilitations that take place under Cesar's guidance and teaching. Viewers witness how after he's helped the dogs, it's the owners he must train. Many dog owners, in their desire to give their pets love and affection, don't establish their leadership role, leaving the dog in control.

Cesar's methodology developed from his keen understanding of canine pack behavior. Unique to Cesar's approach is his "Power of the Pack" method. Incredibly, his own pack of up to 50 dogs, which includes Rottweilers, pit bulls and German shepherds, are able to live together harmoniously. Most dog trainers relate to one animal at a time, but Cesar often uses the pack itself — the natural social unit for canines — to rehabilitate a wayward dog.

Cesar was born in Culiacan, Mexico, during a hurricane that took the roof off the family's house. He spent much of his youth at his grandfather's ranch, growing up with a pack of dogs that were his closest friends. It was his grandfather who taught him the one lesson he still uses today: "Never work against Mother Nature."

While he lived in Mexico, Cesar fondly remembers watching Rin Tin Tin and Lassie on TV, and he was so impressed by the ability of the television dog trainers that he decided to come to the United States to learn from them. Cesar's first job in the United States was as a dog groomer. His uncanny ability with dogs quickly became apparent to clients, who asked for help with their dogs' behavior problems.

Cesar lives in Los Angeles, and spends his spare time with his family — his wife, Illusion, and two sons, Cesar Andre, 11 and Calvin Christian, 7 — all of whom also help him in his work. His new book, Cesar's Way, will be published in April 2006 by Harmony Books.

Insight for Dog Lovers      from Cesar Millan

1. Dogs are not humans. Before they receive love and affection, they need exercise, clear direction and leadership. Giving them love alone doesn't create balance in their lives. Be a pack leader!

2. Rehabilitating a dog is not about "fixing" it. It's about you, the owner, creating the intention for what you want, not what you're feeling. Dogs pick up on feelings of fear, doubt or worry—and they will move to fill them by attempting to become dominant.

3. Practice unwavering leadership every day, especially on your walk. The energy you're projecting internally is the message you're sending to your dog.

4. Dedicate at least 45 minutes of time to the dog's walk in the morning. Let the dog know you have a consistent pattern that you expect it to follow. Utilize your dog's energy in a positive manner.

5. Don't expect more from your dog(s) than your own children. Dogs need discipline, too. Give them rules, boundaries and limitations as well as love.

6. Avoid nurturing your dog's fears or unstable mind. Imagine a successful scenario and hold it in your mind when dealing with your dog.
You are the source of your dog's energy. You are the role model.

7. Challenge the dog's mind—dogs want to know what to do with their lives. Let the dog work for your affection. Once in a calm/submissive state, your love will intensify those qualities in your dog.

8. Dogs need "on" and "off" time. Engage them fully in structured times together; then they can relax and avoid impatient or destructive behaviors.

9. Dogs show us how much we can learn—they live in the moment. Try it!
